abstract

understanding the relationship between sink and source in maize is of prime importance in maize growing regions. in this study, a field experiment was carried out during spring and summer 2007 in the experimental field of the college of agriculture, shiraz university, to examine the effects of source restriction (defoliation) on sink size (yield and its components) of  sc704 maize hybrid.  a factorial arrangement in a randomized complete block design with four replications was used. treatments composed of four stages of source restriction including defoliation at half-silking and 3 consecutive 10 day intervals, as well as three defoliation intensities (zero, half and all leaf removal). it was found that delay in source limitation was associated with a lower mean kernel weight achievement. the highest mean kernel weight was attained in defoliation at half- silking (208.14 g), which also resulted in the lowest grain yield reduction, compared to no defoliation treatment. increase in defoliation intensity was associated with a decrease in grain yield; however, delay in defoliation after mid- silking had no significant effect on grain yield. it was concluded that the grain yield of sc704 maize hybrid was more sensitive to source limitation (i.e. defoliation) intensity than defoliation time.

Response of Yield and Yield Components of Maize (Zea Mayz L.) to Different Bio Fertilizers

A experiment was lay out in order to evaluate the effects  of different biofertilizers on yield and yield components of maize at the Lorestan provience, Iran. The experiment was a factorial design with three replications. Treatments were three nitrogen biofrtilizers (Nitrokara (N1), O4 (N2), O6 (N3) and control (N4)) and three phosphate biofrtilizers ...

Responses of soybean yield and yield components to light enrichment and planting density

Light intensity intercepted by the soybean canopy during the reproductive period is an important environmental factor determining soybean yield components and grain yield. A 2-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of light enrichment and its interaction with planting density on yield formation of soybean cultivars. Light enrichment increased seed yield per plant and yie...

Effect of Planting Patterns and Vermicompost on Yield and Yield Components in Maize and Beans Intercropping

Intercropping systems compared to monoculture systems can more efficiently use the existing resources which ultimately will lead to increased plant performance. Therefore, to evaluate the benefits of intercropping maize and beans and assess its impact on yield and yield’s component, an experiment was conducted in factorial design with randomized complete block design in three replication, in 20...
